Enneagram tritype builder: put your three numbers in order
Start the assessment Free to take, about 10 minutes
Short answer
Pick your core type first, then your strongest type in a second center, then one from the remaining center. The builder writes your tritype code, such as 468, and explains what each number means in Enneagram tradition. You choose every number yourself. The EnneaFox assessment does not score tritype, and no test has been shown to measure one.
Tritype builder, 3 picks
For adults 18 and over. A reflection aid, not a type result and not a diagnosis. Your answers stay on this page and are not stored or sent anywhere. The EnneaFox assessment does not score tritype.
The rules the builder follows
A tritype has exactly one type from each center: gut (8, 9, 1), heart (2, 3, 4) and head (5, 6, 7). The builder enforces that by changing the options at each step. Your first pick can be any of the nine types and becomes the first digit. Your second pick comes from one of the two centers you have not used, and your third from the last center left. The result is one of 162 ordered codes.
The order carries the meaning. 468 and 846 hold the same three types but describe different people in tradition: a Four who also leans on Six and Eight, versus an Eight who also leans on Four and Six. If you are torn about the order, the builder lists the other five arrangements of your three numbers so you can compare them side by side.
What each position means
- First number
- Your core type, the motivation tradition treats as primary. A type assessment, ours included, tries to identify this one.
- Second number
- Your favorite type in a second center, said to come forward when the core strategy stalls.
- Third number
- Your favorite type in the remaining center, typically the least practiced.
What each type contributes
Inside a tritype, each number is read as your habitual way of handling one center. The table sums up the tradition in our own words. Find the row for each of your three numbers.
| Type | Center | As part of a tritype |
|---|---|---|
| 8, Challenger | Gut center | Meets anger and pressure head on: takes charge, sets limits and protects. |
| 9, Peacemaker | Gut center | Settles anger down: keeps the peace, goes along and stays steady. |
| 1, Reformer | Gut center | Turns anger into standards: corrects, improves and holds the line on what is right. |
| 2, Helper | Heart center | Connects by giving: looks for worth in being needed and appreciated. |
| 3, Achiever | Heart center | Connects by achieving: looks for worth in success and a strong impression. |
| 4, Individualist | Heart center | Connects through depth: looks for worth in being authentic and truly understood. |
| 5, Investigator | Head center | Handles uncertainty by watching, gathering knowledge and keeping some distance. |
| 6, Loyalist | Head center | Handles uncertainty by preparing, questioning and leaning on trusted support. |
| 7, Enthusiast | Head center | Handles uncertainty by staying upbeat and keeping options open. |
What the builder cannot do
The builder writes down a code you have already chosen. It does not check whether your choices are right, and it would be misleading to pretend otherwise. The EnneaFox assessment does not score tritype either. It scores all nine types and suggests a best-fit type, which is your likely first number and nothing more.
A careful way to pick your numbers
- Start with your core type. If you are unsure, take the assessment or read the comparison pages first.
- For each of the other two centers, read its three type pages and ask which one matches your habits there, not who you admire.
- Rank those two picks by how often each shows up in an ordinary week.
- Hold the result loosely. Plenty of people find their second and third numbers swap places over the years.
Keep tritype and wing apart. In 468 the 6 is the favorite head type. It is not a neighbor of 4, and a 4w5 could still put 6 in second place.
Frequently asked questions
Does the EnneaFox test tell me my tritype?
No. The assessment does not score tritype. Its full report suggests a best-fit type, which is the first number of a tritype, and the builder helps you think through the other two.
How many tritypes are there?
Twenty-seven sets of three types, and 162 ordered codes once each set is ranked.
Can two numbers come from the same center?
No. A tritype always has one gut, one heart and one head type, so a code like 268 is valid and a code like 236 is not.
How should I write my tritype?
The builder writes it as three digits, such as 468. You will also see 4-6-8 or 4/6/8, which mean the same thing. In every format the core type comes first.
Is tritype supported by research?
Not directly. Tritype is a teaching idea, and we know of no study that measures it. Use it as a lens for reflection.
