Heart triad: Enneagram Types 2, 3 and 4

By EnneaFox editorial teamReviewed

Short answer

The heart triad, or feeling center, is made up of Enneagram Types 2, 3 and 4. Tradition says these types read life through feelings and relationships, and are preoccupied with identity and how they are seen. Their shared emotional theme is shame: Twos seek love, Threes seek admiration, and Fours seek a significant self. Research has not tested the grouping.

The core of the heart triad

Heart types are described as unusually attuned to the emotional climate of a room and to the impression they make in it. The question underneath is about worth: am I valued, am I loved, am I real? Teachers often call the shared emotion shame, meaning the painful sense that who you are is not quite enough. Each heart type has a different strategy for handling it.

Background in tradition

How the term is used

People mention the heart triad when they are weighing types that all look relationally intense. A person stuck between 2 and 9 might ask whether their helpfulness carries a hope of being appreciated, which points to the heart center, or a wish to avoid friction, which points to the gut. Growth teaching for heart types often focuses on separating a sense of worth from feedback: being able to do something well without needing it seen.

A scene from the heart center

At a friend's birthday dinner, three heart types are at the table. The Two has quietly checked that the guest of honor has a drink and noticed who has not been introduced. The Three has kept the conversation lively and is pleased with how the toast landed. The Four is moved by a story someone told but also feels slightly outside the group, as if everyone else knows how to belong more easily.

Evidence

Related terms: center of intelligence, gut triad, head triad and core fear, since each heart type's fear is about worth in a different form.

Frequently asked questions

Are heart types more emotional than other types?

Not necessarily. Tradition says heart types are especially focused on feelings about identity and relationships. Head and gut types have just as many emotions; their main preoccupations are elsewhere.

Why is Type 3 in the heart triad when Threes seem task-focused?

Teachers say the Three's drive for achievement is fueled by a need to feel valuable in other people's eyes. Threes may set feelings aside to get things done, which tradition reads as part of the heart center pattern.

What is the image triad?

It is another name for the heart triad, used because Types 2, 3 and 4 are all said to be preoccupied with self-image in some form.
