Head triad: Enneagram Types 5, 6 and 7

By EnneaFox editorial teamReviewed

Short answer

The head triad, also called the thinking center, groups Enneagram Types 5, 6 and 7. Tradition says these types meet life mainly through the mind and share a concern with fear and security. Fives retreat to understand, Sixes look for support and prepare for risk, and Sevens move toward options and stimulation. The triad is untested tradition.

Thinking as a strategy

Head types are described as people who process experience by thinking about it: analyzing, anticipating, planning or imagining. The underlying worry is about uncertainty. The world feels unpredictable, so the mind is put to work making it manageable. Teachers name the shared emotion fear, though in practice it can look like curiosity, caution, restlessness or cheerful busyness rather than anything that feels like being scared.

Where it comes from

How the term is used

"Head type" is often used loosely to mean a thoughtful or intellectual person, which can mislead. Plenty of gut and heart types are intellectual, and plenty of Sevens would not describe themselves as analytical. In Enneagram usage the term is about where anxiety goes and how it is managed, not about intelligence or education.

A head-center example

Three friends are invited to join a startup. The Five asks for the financials and wants a week alone to read them. The Six calls two people who have worked with the founder and asks what happens if the funding falls through. The Seven is already imagining the launch party and three side projects the job could lead to, and does not dwell on what might go wrong.

What research says

Related terms: center of intelligence, gut triad, heart triad and line of stress, which in tradition links the 5 to the 7 and the 6 to the 3.

Frequently asked questions

Are head types smarter?

No. The label refers to where a type is said to process experience and anxiety, not to intelligence. Every type includes people of all levels of education and ability.

Why is Type 7 a fear type if Sevens seem fearless?

Tradition says Sevens manage fear by staying busy, upbeat and full of options, which keeps painful feelings at a distance. The fear is less visible because the strategy works so well on the surface.

What is the difference between the head triad and the thinking center?

There is none. Both names refer to Types 5, 6 and 7. Some teachers also say mental center or fear triad.
