Levels of health: Enneagram glossary definition

By EnneaFox editorial teamReviewed

Short answer

Levels of health is the Enneagram idea that each type can be expressed along a range from healthy and free to average and habitual to unhealthy and rigid. Two people with the same type can look very different depending on where they sit. One popular version uses nine levels. The concept is tradition, not a measured scale, and is not a mental health assessment.

A vertical dimension inside each type

Type answers "what pattern?" Levels of health answer "how tightly is the pattern gripping right now?" At healthier levels the type's gifts are available and its fears have less pull. In the broad middle, the type's habits run on autopilot. At unhealthy levels the defenses harden and the passion takes over. Teachers stress that people move up and down over a day, a year or a lifetime.

Where the idea comes from

How the term is used

Levels of health are used to explain why stereotypes of a type can feel insulting: descriptions written from the unhealthy range read like accusations, while descriptions from the healthy range sound flattering. They also help in typing, because a person should compare their average self with each type's average range, not their worst day with another type's best.

An example

Two Threes run competing bakeries. One is generous with credit, mentors her staff, and admits when a product launch flopped. The other quietly takes credit for others' recipes, exaggerates sales and cannot tolerate criticism. Tradition says they share a type and differ mostly in level of health.

Frequently asked questions

How many levels of health are there?

It depends on the teacher. One well-known model uses nine levels per type, grouped into healthy, average and unhealthy bands. Others use only three bands or a simple high side and low side.

Does EnneaFox measure my level of health?

No. The assessment suggests a best-fit type and shows alignment with each type. It does not estimate health, stress or well-being.

Can a type be healthier than another type?

No. Each type spans the full range. Level of health describes an individual at a point in time, not a property of a number.

Are levels of health the same as integration?

They are related but separate. Levels describe a range within your own type, while integration describes movement toward a connected type.
