Ego fixation: Enneagram glossary definition

By EnneaFox editorial teamReviewed

Short answer

Ego fixation is the original term for what each point of the personality Enneagram describes: a habitual way the ego narrows and distorts perception. Oscar Ichazo taught nine ego fixations in the late 1960s, and the whole system was once called the enneagram of fixations. Today the phrase also serves as a synonym for type. It is tradition, not research.

A system that began with fixations

Before people talked about the Reformer or the Peacemaker, they talked about ego fixations. In the early teaching, each of the nine points named a characteristic mental trap the ego falls into as it forms. The emphasis was spiritual and diagnostic in the old, non-clinical sense: identify the trap so you can see past it. Personality portraits came later, built on top of this older scaffold.

Origin and history

How the phrase is used today

There are two common uses. In contemplative and older Enneagram circles, someone might say "my ego fixation is Four" where others would simply say "I am a Four." In more detailed teaching, "ego fixation" names the specific mental habit for each type, such as melancholy for Four or planning for Seven, and sits beside the passion. Context usually makes clear which is meant.

The phrase also hints at the Enneagram's original purpose. It was meant less as a way to describe yourself and more as a map of what to see through.

An example of the older usage

At a meditation retreat, a teacher invites participants to notice their ego fixation during a silent meal. A Seven discovers she has mentally planned three future dinners before finishing her soup. A One catches himself silently grading the cook's seasoning. The exercise treats the fixation as something to catch in the act, not a label to wear.

Frequently asked questions

Is ego fixation the same as fixation?

Usually yes. "Fixation" is the shorter form. Some people use "ego fixation" to mean the whole type, while "fixation" alone more often names the specific mental habit.

Why "ego"?

In the early teaching, the ego was the constructed personality that forms over a person's essential nature. The fixation was the way that ego narrows perception.

Is ego fixation a psychological diagnosis?

No. It is a term from spiritual and Enneagram teaching, not from clinical psychology or psychiatry.
