Core motivation: Enneagram glossary definition
Short answer
In the Enneagram, a core motivation is the underlying drive that organizes a type: the thing a person keeps reaching for and the threat they keep steering away from. It is what defines the type, rather than surface behavior. A One is driven to be good and right; a Seven to stay free and satisfied. This is tradition, not a measured construct.
The "why" under the "what"
Enneagram teachers say the same action can come from nine different places. Volunteering at a food bank might be about doing the right thing, being needed, looking good, finding meaning, understanding a social problem, feeling part of a reliable group, enjoying a new experience, protecting the vulnerable, or keeping a community calm. The core motivation is the reason that keeps showing up across many different actions. It usually has two halves: a pull toward something (often called the basic desire) and a push away from something (the core fear).
| Type | Pulled toward | Pushed away from |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Integrity, doing things right | Being wrong or corrupt |
| 2 | Being loved and needed | Being unwanted |
| 3 | Being valued for what they achieve | Worthlessness |
| 4 | A significant, authentic self | Having no identity |
| 5 | Understanding and competence | Being helpless or depleted |
| 6 | Security and support | Being without guidance |
| 7 | Freedom, satisfaction, stimulation | Being trapped in pain |
| 8 | Self-reliance and control of one's life | Being controlled or harmed |
| 9 | Inner and outer peace | Conflict and disconnection |
Background in tradition
How the term is used
Core motivation is the main tool for typing. If you are torn between two types, the advice is almost always to compare motivations, not behaviors. EnneaFox's assessment statements are written about motivation for this reason. The term is also used in growth work: noticing your core motivation in action can soften its grip.
An example
Two colleagues both stay late before a product launch. Asked why, one says, "If something goes wrong tomorrow, I want to know I covered every angle." The other says, "This is my chance to show leadership what I can do." The first sounds like a Six's search for security, the second like a Three's wish to be valued for achievement.

Frequently asked questions
Is core motivation the same as basic desire?
They are closely related. Basic desire usually names the positive half of the motivation, what a type wants. Core motivation is often used more broadly to include both the desire and the fear behind it.
Why does the Enneagram focus on motivation instead of behavior?
Because behavior is ambiguous. Many types can do the same thing for different reasons, so motivation is a clearer way to tell them apart.
Can I have more than one core motivation?
Everyone has many motives. Tradition says one cluster sits at the center for each person and organizes the rest, and that cluster is the type.
