Which Enneagram types are extroverted?

By EnneaFox editorial teamReviewed

Short answer

Types 2, 7 and 8 are the Enneagram types most consistently linked with extraversion in research, and Type 3 often is as well. Each is outgoing for a different reason: 2s move toward people to connect, 3s to be seen succeeding, 7s to find stimulation, and 8s to engage and take charge. These are averages; any type can be introverted or extroverted.

What the research found

A note on spelling: psychologists usually write "extraversion," while everyday English often uses "extroversion." They mean the same thing here: a tendency toward sociability, assertiveness, and energy in company.

Four kinds of outgoing

Put a 2, a 3, a 7 and an 8 at the same wedding reception, and all four might be described as extroverts. Watch closely and they are doing different things.

Why each extroverted type moves toward people (tradition)
TypeWhat draws them inAt the wedding reception
2Connection and being wantedChecking on the grandmother, introducing lonely guests, refilling drinks
3Recognition and successNetworking, giving a polished toast, quietly tracking how it landed
7Fun, novelty, and optionsStarting the dance floor, planning the after-party, hopping between tables
8Engagement and controlTelling the DJ to turn it up, settling a dispute, protecting a friend

What about the other types?

Type 6 is often described as warm and sociable with trusted people but wary with strangers, and research tends to place it lower on extraversion. Type 1 can be socially confident, especially when advocating for a cause, but is usually described as more reserved. Types 4, 5 and 9 are more often described as introverted, though outgoing members of each exist.

Extroverted, but not the type you expected

Extraversion can lead people to mistype. An outgoing, entertaining 6 might assume they are a 7. A gregarious 9 who loves hosting might read as a 2. An energetic, socially fluent 4 might test as a 3. In each case, asking why you enjoy people is more useful than noting that you do.

Ambiverts and mixed cases

Many people do not land clearly at either end of the scale. They enjoy a dinner party and then need a quiet morning, or they are outgoing at work and private at home. Extraversion is a continuous trait, so this middle ground is where a large share of people sit. For an ambivert, social energy is almost useless as an Enneagram clue, and the motive question carries all the weight.

It also helps to remember that the Enneagram describes social behavior as a means, not an end. An outgoing 3 and a reserved 3 are after the same thing, and the type description is about that shared aim. Two people at opposite ends of the extraversion scale can have the same type without any contradiction.

Extraversion and stress

Outgoing types do not always look outgoing. Tradition describes a stressed 7 becoming critical and withdrawn, a stressed 2 becoming forceful and demanding, and a stressed 8 retreating to think things over in private. If you only take a test during a hard stretch, an extroverted type can look surprisingly reserved on paper.

So if you are outgoing and trying to find your type, note what you get from people, and read the 2, 3, 7 and 8 pages with that answer in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Which Enneagram type is the most extroverted?

Research links Types 2 and 7 most consistently with extraversion, with 8 close behind. No reliable data ranks them precisely.

Is Type 3 an extrovert?

Often. Research found a link in most but not all of the reviewed studies, and introverted 3s exist.

Can an extrovert be a Type 5?

Yes, though it is less common on average. An outgoing 5 still guards energy and privacy in ways other types do not.
