Which Enneagram type am I if I relate to all of them?

Short answer

Relating to every Enneagram type is common and usually means you are reading for behavior rather than motive. Everyone is sometimes perfectionist, helpful, ambitious, or anxious. The type that fits is the one whose core fear you recognize as a lifelong pattern, especially the uncomfortable parts. Narrowing by center and reading the less flattering sections usually brings one or two types forward.

Why it happens

Type descriptions are written to be recognizable, which means they include many ordinary human experiences. Wanting to do a good job, wanting to be loved, fearing failure, wanting freedom: those belong to everyone. If you read nine descriptions looking for things you have felt, you will find something in each one.

Five ways to narrow it

  1. Switch from "do I do this?" to "is this what I am protecting?" Everyone helps; not everyone feels worthless when they are not needed.
  2. Start with center. Ask whether anger, image, or fear is the theme you return to most, then read only those three types.
  3. Read the unhealthy sections. Flattering strengths overlap; the specific ways a type falls apart overlap far less.
  4. Look at yourself at fifteen or twenty, before work and family shaped your habits.
  5. Ask someone who knows you to pick the two descriptions that sound most like you, then compare their choice to yours.

A narrowing exercise

Try this with a pen. For each type, write the one thing you would least like someone to say about you, based on that type's core fear. You might write: "You cut corners" for 1, "Nobody really needs you" for 2, "You are a fraud" for 3, "You are ordinary" for 4, "You are clueless" for 5, "You are on your own" for 6, "You are stuck here" for 7, "You are weak" for 8, and "You are causing a scene" for 9. Read them aloud. Usually one or two land harder than the others. Those are your candidates.

When it is a sign of a particular type

Some teachers say that relating to every type is itself a mild clue. Type 9 is often described as merging with whatever it reads, finding itself in every point of view. Type 6 may doubt each answer in turn. Type 7 may enjoy every option too much to commit. This is folklore more than evidence, but if one of those patterns sounds familiar, read that type first.

What not to do

  • Do not average the nine descriptions into a blur and declare yourself "a bit of everything."
  • Do not pick the type with the most appealing strengths list.
  • Do not let online type stereotypes, like "all 8s are loud," rule a type in or out.

Give the process time

Many people who start out relating to every type find that, after a few weeks of watching themselves, the picture sharpens. A moment of irritation in traffic, a reaction to criticism, or a habit you notice on vacation can suddenly point clearly at one description. Keeping a short list of candidate types in your notes app and jotting down moments that fit or contradict them is a simple, effective way to let the answer emerge from your own life rather than from more reading.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad that I relate to every type?

No. It is one of the most common experiences people have when learning the Enneagram.

Does relating to all types mean I am a 9?

Some teachers suggest it, since 9s are said to see themselves in everything, but it is not reliable on its own. Read the 9 description and see if the core fear fits.

Should I take more tests?

One or two careful tests are useful. Many quick ones tend to add noise rather than clarity.
